How to play “Keisan-Bridge”

Materials : playing cards

Suitable person : from kindergarteners to the elderly

Number of players  : 2 – 5 players ( 6 players are possible, but a little ingenuity is required ) per one set of playing card

Playing time: 5 10 minutes per 1 game

〈Rules〉

1: Deal 7 cards to each player and place the remaining cards face down to create the draw pile. Play rock-paper-scissors, and the winner starts playing cards clockwise.

2: Flip over the top card from the draw pile to determine the “field card.” Each player must “calculate” with their hand cards to match the value of the field card, placing the cards in front of them. Players can use addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (×), and division (÷) for calculations. Parentheses can also be used. When you put cards on the field, say the calculation out loud.

3: Players can play up to 3 cards per turn. It’s okay to play just 1 or 2 cards.

(For example, if the field card is ‘7’, ‘J[11]’ + ‘4’ – ‘8’ equals ‘7’, so you can put the ‘J[11]’, ‘4’, and ‘8’ cards on the field.)

4: If you cannot match the value of the field card with your hand cards, draw one card from the draw pile, add it to your hand, and end your turn. (Even if the drawn card allows you to calculate the value, you cannot put it on that turn.)

5: Once all players have taken a turn, flip over a new card from the draw pile as the new field card, and continue to calculate and play cards from your remaining hand.

6: When the draw pile runs out of cards, gather the cards in play, leaving one field card, shuffle well, and reuse as the draw pile.

7: The first player to play all their hand cards wins. The total number of cards left in the hands of players who did not finish becomes penalty points. (Players who finished have 0 point.)

8: The second round starts with the player who had the most penalty points in the previous game. (Be careful, this is not the person with the highest cumulative points.)
